The Hannover Medical School (MHH), with about 10.000 employees the biggest company of Lower Saxony, is a university institution for research and teaching in the human and dental medicine and a university hospital of supra-maximum medical care. Research, teaching, medical care and administration work hand in hand in the integration model at the MHH-campus.
The MHH is one of the locations of the newly established Lower Saxony research center for artificial intelligence and causal methods in medicine – CAImed (https://caimed.de/). At CAImed, international teams research and develop innovative methods at the interface between AI and personalized medicine and contribute to tackling common diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. CAImed at MHH offers a position as PhD student at the “Human-centered AI” Junior Research Group:

The position will be associated with the Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics (PLRI) of TU Braunschweig and MHH. PLRI, one of the largest medical informatics institutions in Germany, offers excellent research opportunities. The advertised position will be located on the MHH campus and will work closely with the radiology department and the data integration center of the MHH. We collaborate in interdisciplinary projects with health care centers, research institutes, enterprises and public organizations on a regional, national and global level.

Your tasks
  • Combine AI, data visualization and human-machine interaction to identify data relationships and patterns for clinical decision models
  • Propose new AI designs and provide key insights into data processing and modeling decisions
  • Manage the end-to-end process of data preparation, exploration, model generation and training, as well as model application
  • Design visual analytics methods for iterative and interactive analysis of complex data and evaluation of AI models
  • Analyze complex data from various experiments and design changes
  • Develop methods that make AI-based predictions understandable for developers, clinicians and patients
  • Collaborate with other CAImed research groups on applications such as oncology and infectious diseases 

Our requirements
  • Obtained a Master’s degree in the area of computer sciences, data science, information systems, medical informatics, bioinformatics, business informatics, mathematics or a comparable course of study
  • Strong research experience in (at least) one of the following fields: Visual analytics of medical data , AI-based medical image analysis, Clinical Decision Support Systems, Medical data science and/or knowledge engineering
  • Very good oral and writing skills in English; German language skills are advantageous
  • Willingness to work closely with an interdisciplinary project team
  • Initiative and result-orientated working style
  • Publication experience is a bonus
